In August 1862, he volunteered for 9-months of service in the Union Army, 126th Regiment, Co. D from Tioga County, PA . He fought in the Battle of Fredericksburg (VA) in December 1862. He re-enlisted in September 1864 to serve with the 189th New York Infantry Regiment, Co. I. Within two months, he was promoted to Corporal and then to Sergeant. His regiment saw many battles, including Hatcher's Run and Appomattox, and they participated in the final pursuit of General Lee. He was present at the surrender of the Confederacy at Appomattox Courthouse, and later participated in the Grand Review in Washington, DC.
On December 6, 1865, he married Henrietta Gertrude Barney, with whom he had two daughters, Henrietta, born September 1, 1868, and Margaret "Maggie", born May 16, 1870. They resided in Independence, New York, and later in Bradford, Pennsylvania. Gertrude passed away October 10, 1882. Shortly thereafter, Delos moved to Saginaw, Michigan with his daughter Henrietta. In 1892, he married Margaret "Maggie" Hoose (maiden name Clark) in Saginaw.
While in Saginaw, he worked as an expert mechanic with Cooper and Avery for 18 years. He served as an alderman for the 9th Ward and was served two terms as Director of the Poor. Delos was a prominent member of Camp Sherman, No. 1, N.L.V.S., and served as Chaplain. He was also a member of the Saginaw post, No. 38, G.A.R. and the Knights of Pythias.
Delos died from Bright's Disease (nephritis) at 3:15 AM on September 17, 1907. His funeral took place at 2:30pm on Wednesday September 19, 1907 at his home at 1121 McCoskry Street in Saginaw, with interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Saginaw. He was survived by his daughter Henrietta and husband Charles Scherping of Saginaw, his daughter Maggie and husband William Bundy of New York, and his step-son Arthur Hoose, of Saginaw, as well as his grand-children W. Milton, D. Leonard, Carl L., H. Bundy, and Margaret Scherping of Saginaw.
