Russell was awarded a Silver Star for the action that cost him his life on July, 12 1944 during the battel of Saipan. The citation said in part, "while commanding a platoon of a heavy weapons (machine guns) company that had exhausted all weapons during an enemy counter attack, Russell charged out of his foxhole. Having no ammunition himself, he used his gun as a club. His action distracted the enemy long enough to permit the survivors to rejoin the perimeter. Lieutenant Nord continued to fight until overcome by the enemies bayonets and swords."
