Lum Garrison was married to Laura Augusta Hicks on 21 September, 1884.

THe following is his obituary in the June 1926 NEWS HERALD:

"The sudden death of Mr. L.C. Garrison, which ocurred at his home early Sunday morning, was a distinct shock to relatives and friends. Mr. Garrison, who was known to all as "Lum", had worked as usual on Saturday and had not complained before retiring on Saturday night, but just before daylight Sunday morning he awakened his wife and son, telling them he was sick. The son, June, hurried to get a doctor, but before his return Mr. Garrison had passed away. His daughters who live her were summoned but so sudden was his passing that they were unable to reach him before he died. Asthma and heart trouble were probably the causes of his death. He was 68 years of age.

Besides his wife, who was a Miss Hicks, and the son who lives at home MR. Garrison is survived by another son, Herbert B. Garrison, of Roanoke, Va', who came home at once in response ro the message announcing his father's death, and three daughters Mrs. Sam Pollard (Clara), Mrs. Tom Fleming, and Mrs. C.B. Kincaid, all of Morganton. The funeral services, conducted by Rev. W.R. Bradshaw, were held Monday afternoon at Mt. Home Baptist church and interment made in the church yard there.

Mr. Garrison was one of Morganton's best known citizens. His homely philosophy and unfailing good humor made him the center of every group into which he happened to drift. He was a unique character and his comment along light and serious lines was always interesting. He will be greatly missed in Morganton."

He was once quoted as advising then-representative Sam Ervin, Jr. that we "pass no more laws and repeal half of those we had."
