Sgt. Charles D. Rice, Son of City Attourney Jeff R. Rice, Reported Missing, Slain in France.
Bentonville, Ark., Feb. 1.-City Attorney and Mrs. Jeff R. Rice were informed last nihgt by the war department that their son, Sergeant Charles David Rice, 22 years old, who previously was reported missing in action, was killed in action France January 8. Sergeant Rice entered the service in July, 1943, and received his training at Camp Adair, Ore., and went overseas with an infantry unit about a months ago. He was a graduate of Bentonville high school and was graduated with honors and high military honors from the University of Arkansas. Surviving besides his parents are a brother, Jeff R. Rice, Jr., who now is taking training in radio in Baltimore, Md., after his medical discharge from the army; a sister Miss Shirley Ric,e a student at the University of Arkansas; his grandmothers, Mrs. Charles M. Rice and Mrs. D. W. Peel, sr., of Bentonville. He is a great-grandson of the late Colonel Samuel W. Peel, a member of congress from this district for 10 years. An uncle Dave W. Bentonville, Ark., May 14. - The body of Sergeant Charles David Rice, who was killed in action January 8, 1945, in the battle of the bulge and who was buried at Epenal, France, will arrive here Saturday morning and will be reburied at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the family lot in Bentonville cemetery. The services will be in charge of the Rev. J. B. Maxwell, pastor of the Baptist church, and arrangements in charge of the Callison McKinney funeral home. Born and reared in Bentonville. Sergeant Rice was 22 years old and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff R. Rice. He was a graduate of Bentonville high school and an honor graduate of the school of business administration of the University of Arkansas in 1943. He was a member of Pershing's Rifles at the university and received the highest honors in military work the year of his graduation. After four years in the R.O.T.C. at then university, he entered active military service in July, 1943, and was a member of company E, 276th Infantry, Seventeenth division.
