Son of John and Betty Carter Bassett. He was attending Princeton when called home upon the death of his father at Eltham, which he inherited. Married August 1st 1826 to Betty Burnet Lewis. They had Cloverlea, finished in 1844 in Hanover County built for their home. Bassett was named after his great uncle, the nation's first President.
