According to Vol. I of Lee County History, the community was Cole Springs, and there was a Baptist Church there by 1854. Cole Springs had 48 eligible students in a school census of 1898, and school was held in the church building built in 1879 which burned about 1901. The church was rebuilt and school continued in it until a school building was erected in 1913 a mile or more west of the church, on land donated by E. C. Burroughs out of the T. H. Morrison Survey. Cole Springs was about 4 miles west of Tanglewood on County Road 419.

Cole Springs. -- This community sustained the loss of another former citizen in the death of E.C. Burroughs, who died at Rusk on December 30, of cerebral hemorage. Mr. Burroughs was born May 31, 1866 in Ohio. He was married to Miss Ida Beard in 1885 and to this union three children were born, of which two surive -- Mrs. Ida Smith and Guy Burroughs. Ten grandchildren also survive and two brothers who live in Ohio. His wife preceded him in death by some thirty years. Interment was in the Tanglewood Cemetery Wednesday afternoon.
