--------Letter written at Vinton La.-----fr Coop
this is a letter that my grandfather wrote to Lelah
(my Mother) ------at top of page is this---Your grandfather is now married to Iva Holland and living in Drumright Ok
I don't know wheather I answered your letter or not but we are visiting Walter and Jerry Scott, the ones you met last May when driving us to Fla. We are both well and enjoying the weather. We, Jerry's daughter and family will all go fishing next week up in Marshall Texas--power boat and all the picnic supplies furnished--rest of letter on weather etc. and here is where he has found more info on Grass family--I think grandfather visited his brother Lewis who was alive and living in Fla. ?? But here again Iva had kids living in Fla.---I have no idea who Walter and Jerry Scott are but does mention this Jerry drove quite a few miles on this trip (took over for grandfather). Iva Edith Parent & lst husband Harry Wesley Purcell are parents of Jerry Scott.

---our family was quite surprised when after my grandmothers death my grandfather loaded up his old 51 studebaker and headed for Drumright Ok. where abt a year later he married Ida ? I lost all contact with him after this and my mother did not hear from him that much either----to this day we do not know if we had family in that area or why he went or wound up in Drumright Ok.
except now we do know he got married again. Coop

Letter from Fred Grass to his daughter Lelah
"The 91st after being captured by Morgan, later traded
back and my grandfather, (Alfred Grass), joined with
Grant. He had to resign his commission and returned to Illinios where he taught school before coming to Kansas
1869. He took up a homestead where I remember living
until the age of 7, then my folks moved to Jefferson
Kansas where your mother was born. She got to see
Grandpa's old cabin and visited the cemetery on his
place where he and grandma Grass are buried. He died in 1873, she in 1908. I saw her but not Grandpa but Goldie
has his picture in civil war uniform. Dick and Floye are 8th generation."

Remembrances of Frederick Grass (1884-1968) - - - - -
"Raymond Grass told me of letters he had received from Frederick Grass in which he states he had visited the graves of Alfred & Belinda Grass before the Gov't took
over the whole community and Fred & his siblings did not know where the graves had been moved.
Frederick Grass b 1884 d 28 Sept 1968 was buried
Drumright, Okla. Both Alfred and Belinda Grass were
buried on the home place Cherryvale, KS.
Fred told Raymond Belinda Grass smoked a clay pipe
most of her life.
Fred also remembered visiting grandparents in Springfield, MO when, as children, Sam & Ida took them there by wagon. Samuel moved with his family to the Acom (Akim) farm near Deering, KS. in 1891.
Frederick moved from Cherryvale, KS as a youngster with
his parents to Deering, KS. Fred started teaching school
at Bates High School 1903 when he was 19 years old.
He taught school for 40 years and retired in 1961.
Fred remembered being in Coffeeville, KS 1892 when the Daltons tried to rob 2 banks. He also remembered the opening of the Cherokee Strip into Indian Territory in 1893. He told in a letter of a visit in 1889 when Sam & family went to Missouri to visit an aunt of Fred's,
Mrs.E. M. Snyder and the cousin of Fred's who was Alfred Snyder of Springfield, Mo. He mentioned he (Fred) had
other cousins in Kansas by the name of Lowman on his mother's side of the family. Fred visited his brother
Lewis in Florida March 1968. Fred was 21 years older
than Lewis."
