From his obituary in "The Mooresville Times", Mooresville, Indiana, February 7, 1919:
Charley H. Shrake is a name with which all Mooresville is familiar. He was born, married, lived and died a citizen of this place. Many have laughed with him, at his jests and witticisms, may have sympathised with him in his sorrows and bereavements, but now we meet to say farewell. To lift the curtain for a moment and look once more on the familiar face, to recall memories of former meetings and conversations with one who has gone from among us, who will never again respond to our greetings or answer to our call.
Whatever may have been our attitude toward him in life, we will now be glad to remember any kindness shown him either in word or deed. May our reverence for the dead increase our regard for the living and stimulate our efforts to multiply the joys and diminish the sorrows of those about us.
Charles H. Shrake, son of John and Julia Shrake was born Sept. 15, 1862. He died Feb. 2, 1919, aged 56 years, 5 months, and 17 days. On Sept. 30, 1895 he was united in marriage with Bertha Smith, a little more than five years ago the tragic death of his companion was one of the dark chapters and bitter experienes of his life. To them three children were born. Their only son, Paul, died in infancy and their two daughters, Agnes and Rosa - Mrs. Carl Rieman and Mrs. Arnold Evans, are here today to see their father laid away by the mother whose memory is still fresh to many of our citizens. Besides his daughters he leaves three little grand children. To the oldest of these, little Desmonda Rieman, he was deeply and tenderly attached. She responded to his affection with the fervor of innocent childhood. Besides his own posterity, he leaves three brothers, Lewis W., John W., and William A. Shrake, all of Mooresville, and one sister, Mrs. Lida Rennells of Indianapolis, another sister Mrs. Rosa Broadric preceded him to the world beyond several years ago.
The last few years of his life have been years of affliction; he knew and recognized the fact that his days were drawing to a close. For three weeks his suffering has been intense. But the end came so quietly that those who watched beside him to minister to his comfort were not aware that he was gone, until going to his bedside to notice his condition they found that the last long sleep had settled down. His son-in-law, Carl Rieman, with whom he lived and whose care and ministrations to him in his last hours seemed to be greatly appreciated by him, had drawn the bed clothing around him carefully and left him, as he thought, to rest a little as he seemed to be sinking to sleep. He was sinking to sleep, the sleep that knows no waking. When he turned to him again, he found that he was gone.
