Carl Leonard Tornholm, the son of Emil and Anna Sunberg Tornholm was born June 1, 1920 southeast of Red Oak in Red Oak Township of Montgomery County, Iowa. He died on Friday, May 16, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Society of Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 87 years, 11 months and 15 days.
Leonard was nine years old when his father died. He attended country school at Fairview #7 in Red Oak Township thru eighth grade. He then attended Red Oak High School, graduating on May 31, 1937, the day before his 17th birthday. During high school Leonard worked on Saturdays at the A & P grocery store. After graduating he did farm work, and later worked in Chicago until Uncle Sam called him to serve his country during World War II. Leonard entered the U.S. Army on July 7, 1943 at Camp Grant, IL and was assigned to the 107th General Hospital as a Medical Technician. He spent 11 months in the European Theater of Operations lovingly caring for the wounded. After his return to the U.S. from overseas duty, and as the war ended, he was assigned to the Hospital Train Unit caring for the wounded, as they returned home from their destinations. Leonard received his honorable discharge on February 16, 1946. After the war he did farm work for a short time and then worked at Thompson-Bergren Hardware and the Union Carbide Battery Co.
Leonard was united in marriage to Elsie Carlson on May 12, 1947 at Red Oak, Iowa. To this union 5 children were born: Caroline Adams, Loren Tornholm, Teresa Hamilton, Karen Ficek and Marla Anderson. Leonard and Elsie started farming in October of 1949 after a layoff at the Union Carbide Battery Co. They first lived southwest of Red Oak for 7 years, then Southeast of Red Oak for 7 years, and then made their home the next 27 years in Taylor County, Iowa. Leonard and Elsie retired in l991 and returned to Red Oak where they lived until his death. He was a member of the First Covenant Church in Red Oak, where he was confirmed. Leonard was always active in his churches, taught Sunday school and held offices in each church he attended.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Theodore, Norman, and Clark; three sisters: Louise Rydberg, Esther Tornholm and an infant sister, Norma.
