Thurman E. Agness, 99, Peru, passed away at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011 at Miller's Merry Manor, Peru.
He was born in Howard County on Dec. 1, 1911 to Earl and Hazel Pence Agness. Thurman married Dorothy Reed on March 10, 1934, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 14, 1964. He married Marguerite "Peg" Woodmansee on May 28, 1966 at Main Street United Methodist Church, Peru, and she survives.
Thurman was a 1929 graduate of Clay Township High School and a retired Miami County farmer. A man of great faith, he was an active member of McGrawsville United Methodist Church, where he served as a lay leader for over 30 years and also served as Sunday school superintendent for 24 years. Thurman is a former trustee of Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and served as lay delegate to the Annual Methodist Conference for 30 years.
Thurman and Peg wintered in Bradenton, Fla. for 34 years and he was active on various boards at Bradenton Castle, including serving as chairman of the Bradenton Castle Board of Directors. They thoroughly enjoyed traveling and traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and abroad. Thurman and Peg lived at Blair Ridge in Peru for the last nine years, and he was the unofficial "Mayor of Blair Ridge," as he took great interest in its operation.

He will be remembered by his family and friends for many things, among them: his unwavering dedication to God and his church, his singing and musical ability, how he whistled while he worked, his incredible memory of family history, his frugality alongside his generosity, his uncanny ability to remember what things cost "back in the day," his storytelling, his enjoyment of leadership, his extensive knowledge of ditching (a family joke), his good business sense, and most of all, his unflinching integrity.
Surviving in addition to his wife Peg is a daughter, Elaine Glassburn, Bunker Hill; a son, Jay (Kathy) Agness, Cedar Falls, Iowa; sisters, Geneva Willson, Kokomo, Ruthanna Borden, Peru and Carolyn (John) Einselen, Peru, a brother, Gene (Fern) Agness, Bradenton, Fla.; grandchildren, Teri (Doug) Roberts, Tami (Rick) Allison, Robyn (Bill) Gruber, Kari (Matthew) Halko, Susan (Kenneth) Larimer, Kevin Glassburn, Michael (Eliana) Agness and Marcia (Michael) Kochel; and great-grandchildren, Sarah Larimer, William Kochel, Kate Kochel, Brian Roberts, Bradley Roberts, Benjamin Allison, Bethany Allison, Abbie Allison, Bill Gruber Jr., Kellie Gruber, Jerrod Gruber, Julia Agness, Ryan Halko and Mason Parrott.

Burial will be in Clymer Cemetery, Miami County.
