The Columbian, St. Helens, Columbia Co. Or Friday, August 17, 1883
Wednesday night at 10 o'clock pm Abby A Howard, wife of H.O. Howard and daughter of C.S. Emerson, departed this life at her residence on Milton Creek. The doctor pronounced it scarlatina. It ended with congestion of the brain. She has left a husband, fond parents, brothers and sisters, and four babies, the youngest but four months old to mourn her loss. This is very sad, and arouses the tenderest sympathy of the community. She would be 25 years old the 21st day of Dec next. She was born at Machiasport, Maine.

Rhoda and Herbie's obits
The Columbian St. Helens, Columbia Co. OR Friday, Sept 7, 1883
Mr. H.O. Howard's babe has joined its mother in the other world. It passed away on Wednesday eve. Mrs. Jane McNulty and Mrs Bonny were there to take care of the sick and dying.

Dear Babe, gone to its mother's breast,
In heavenly shades to sleep and rest.
To feed a mother's warm embrace
Enclasp it in the sacred place.
Where Death no loving heart can sever.
United there to beat forever
In sweetest unison of bliss
Earth has no happiness like this.
In pity Jesus undefiled
To mother's arms sent home her child---
Forever stilled its little cries
With the rapture of Paradise.

Oct 12, 1883 The Columbian.
Mr. H.O. Howard has lost another child. His little son Bertie has joined his sister Rhoda and mother in the "land of the dead". He died Oct 5th and the sixth was the day of the burial. Rev. Mr. Crozier sang and prayed at Mr. Howard's house where was the funeral. The fear of contagion kept neighbors away and few attended.

Just and wise and pure and good
Unseen angel's round him stood,
Took him ___ his form was cold
For his mother to enfold
Mother, sister gone before
Stood upon the other shore;
Little sister wings outspread
When she knew her brother dead.
Conveyed him as quick and light
As the lightning in its flight
Till the mother clasped her child
In a region undefiled
Theirs a trinity of bliss
Their regret is only this
Half a family below
Left to stem that tide of woe
But their thoughts will ever turn
Where three stars in Heaven burn.

"Homes in the Oregon Forest" by Egbert S. Oliver. Page 6 says Abbie (Emerson) Howard, died August 8, 1883 and was buried in the Germany Hill cemetery near Goble, as were her 2 children Herbie & Rhoda. Herbie & Rhoda were born in Rainier and died young from an epidemic.

Germany Hill Cemetery is also a name for the Masonic Cemetery"

Therefore I have moved her to Masonic Cemetery
