Prisoner In Local Jail Found Dead

Ike Kilgore, Held For Federal Court Hearing
     Before McClintic, Succumbs During Night

AGED MAN'S BODY IS FOUND IN BUNK

                  Arrest Made January 28
                On Moonshine Still Charge

Ike Kilgore, 61, prisoner awaiting trial at the Huntington term of federal court, passed from the jurisdiction of that tribunal sometime between 12:30 and 8 o'clock this morning. He was found dead in his bunk on the third floor of the Raleigh County jail by Leslie Hollandsworth, turnkey, who had gone there to arouse him for breakfast.

Dr. E. S. Dupuy, physician to federal prisoners, called by Jailor A. M. Godbey, pronounced Kilgore dead.

                    Arrested January 28
Kilgore was arrest January 28 along with Raymond Westmoreland by Prohibition Agent H. P. Stone. The two men were charged jointly with the operation of a moonshine still. A hearing conducted by United States Commissioner W. H. Rardin January 29 resulted in the two being held for federal court action at the Huntington term. They were jailed when unable to make bond, fixed at $2,000 for Kilgore, $1,000 for Westmoreland.

Judge Rardin, informed of the death of Kilgore, said that the prisoner had admitted his guilt on the occasion of the preliminary hearing.

                   Alive After Midnight
Fellow prisoners reported seeing Kilgore alive as late as 12:30 this morning, when he retired. So far as could be learned, he had not been ill, and nothing untoward was observed in his actions before that hour.

Hollandsworth, arousing prisoners for breakfast, went to Kilgore's bunk on the third floor of the jail. When the old man failed to respond to his summons, Hollandsworth shook him before discovering that he was dead.

Kilgore had recently made his home with a daughter at Eccles. The still which he was accused of operating was located, it was said, somewhere between Eccles and Metalton.
