Mrs. Mae Doane Washburn, wife of State Senator O.R. Washburn, of Crawford County, is one of those women who, although comparatively unknown to the public, has had a powerful influence upon the affairs of the Commonwealth. She is the daughter of I.S. Doane of Meadville (formerly chief engineer of several great railroad systems), a distant relative of Dr. Parkhurst, of New York, and a descendant of the famous Governor Winthrop of Massachusetts. She unites a strongly domestic nature with a scientific spirit, and in a quiet way, has been a large factor in her husband's successful work.

She was educated in Allegheny College, and afterward, from a pure love of duty, spent two years in the Meadville Theological School. After her marriage, she began to take a keen interest in politics, and has unusual ability in forcasting political results and determining the strong and weak points of a campaign. She has never given much attention to society life, but has an evident talent for it, and at the Governor's reception on New Year's Day, where she received with Mrs. Stone, gained the good will and interest of the social leaders at the capital.

Mrs. Washburn is a brunette, with a stature that hardly reaches her husband's shoulder, has a charming manner and an especial faculty for setting people at their ease. In conversation, she is very original, and has a keen and quiet wit that would give her prominence should she ever conclude to enter social life.

She is now with her children in Baltimore for the winter, and is taking a regular course in the Southern Medical College there, saying she prefers that kind of study to any other pursuit. She has two bright children (Marion and Winthrop Washburn), the care of which she attends to personally, and seems to be making the most that can be made out of life.
