Evidence indicates that Hans was the oldest son of Thor Hanson Haugen (1801-1861) and spouse Gunhild Abrahamsdatter Breivel from Sandefjord, Norway. Hans married Birthe Marie Hansdsatter in 1861, and they had 4 known children between 1862 and 1868. It's believed that they emigrated to Kandiyohi County after 1868 and before 1888, when Hans' younger brother Thor Henrik Thorson Haugen arrived from Norway. Hans owned a farm in Edwards Township. Thor moved on to Grant County. Hans originally carried the Haugen farm name like his father. Hans, however, did not have inheritance rights, probably because his father had an older son from a previous marriage. Both Hans and Thor dropped the Haugen name when they became U.S. citizens. (Many Norwegian immigrants were sons of farmers who did not have inheritance rights at a time when available land was scarce).
