ALENE E. FORCE
Alene Eloise Woods was born on June 11, 1932, south of Russell, to Kenneth Waldo and Theo Juanita (Long) Woods. Alene passed away on January 13, 2011, at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, Calif. at the age of 78 years old.
Alene attended Russell Schools until the 8th grade, then her family moved to Englewood, Colorado. She attended Hawthorne Middle School through the 9th grade and then went to Englewood High School until she graduated from 12th grade in 1950. While in school, Alene participated in school plays and played basketball while she was in Colorado. She belonged to the Bluebirds and the Campfire Girls in Colorado.
Alene married Eugene Douglas Smith in 1952. To this union two children were born, Robert Eugene and Rhonda Kay.
Alene married Paul Eugene Force on June 11, 1999.
Alene worked several years as a bookkeeper for the Gambles Store in Chariton, Iowa. She then worked as a bookkeeper for Southern Iowa Contractors. She later worked as a bookkeeper for Dr. Loren Hermann, in Russell. She worked for Dr. Hermann for ten years.
She helped the American Legion Auxiliary with Russell Homecoming Events. When the Lions Club would put on a Horseshoe Tournament, a Tractor Pull Contest or an auction, Alene would always be there volunteering to help serve food.
Through the years, Alene belonged to many organizations while she lived in Russell. She belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary, and has held all the offices of this organization, clear up to the County President. She was an assistant with the Girl Scouts. She belonged to the Lions Club. She was also the secretary/treasurer of NARFE. Alene also belonged to the Methodist Church and was their secretary for five years.
Survivors include, her husband Paul Force of Russell, Iowa, one sister, Shirley (Floyd) Dixon of Colo., her son, Robert (Cindy) Smith and children Jason, Juston and Jordan of Ariz., her daughter Rhonda Smith and children, Amber, Anthony and Ethan of Colo., and an aunt, Mildred (Cook) Long of Pepin, Wisc. Arlene is also survived by nephews and great grandchildren.
Services were held on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the Faith United Methodist Church in Russell, Iowa with Pastor Raymond Doser officiating. Visitation was held on Friday, January 21, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fielding Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Jason Smith, Juston Smith, Greg Smith, Rick Dixon, Harley Keeney and Ron Fennema. Interment was in the Russell Cemetery.
