Oakland — HARRISONBURG,VIRGINIA -- Elizabeth Wise, 94, of Sunnyside Retirement Communities, Harrisonburg, formerly of Moorefield, W.Va., passed away Thursday evening, Feb. 25, 2010 at Sunnyside.

Born April 19, 1915 in Hardy County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles C. Wise and Florence Golladay Wise. She was a 1937 graduate of West Virginia University, where she received a degree in English and was a member of Delta Gamma sorority.

Miss Wise taught school at Moorefield High School for three years and then worked for several years in Martinsburg, W.Va. at the personnel office of the Veterans Hospital, before returning to Moorefield to care for her parents. She was a life long member of the Moorefield Presbyterian Church where she faithfully taught Bible in the Church School and Women of the Church Programs. She was a loyal fan and generous supporter of West Virginia University. In 1978, she and her brother, Charles C. Wise Jr., of Charleston, gave a gift to the WVU Foundation, Inc. of 4,260 acres of mountain timberland, valued at $714,000, in their native Hardy County.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Philip N. Wise and her brother, Charles C. Wise Jr.

She is survived by her nieces, Victoria Wise Downs, Phyllis Wise Pearson, Martha Wise Callan, Elizabeth Wise Snodgrass, Laura Wise Florence, Mary Wise Overfield; her nephews, Anthony C. Wise, Charles C. Wise III, Christopher D. Wise, and John C. Wise; and numerous great-nieces and nephews and their children.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Sunnyside with Pastors Katherine Jackson and Paul O'Gorek officiating. Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m. at the Olivet Cemetery, Moorefield.
