Sanford F. Brown was born in Lysander, New York. He came to Columbia County, Wisconsin, with his family around 1860, at about age 7. He enlists in the regular army in 1873 and is under the command of General Custer, but was not part of the troops slain at the massacre at Little Big Horn. He marries Laura Clark in 1875, in Cincinnati, Ohio, while still serving in the military. Laura dies in 1894. Sanford remarries in 1897 to Mary Towner Hartman. Mary's first husband, Melvin Wilson Hartman had been affected by his military service in the Civil War and was institutioalized around 1892 and they had divorced.
Sanford Brown had been married to Mary Adelaide Towner about six years when he died. He had no children. Sanford F. Brown dies in 1903 at age 49.
