AUBURN - ANNA M SURFUS, 102, died Thursday Aug 14, 2003 at Parkview Noble Hospital in Kendallville.
She taught in Garrett-Keyser-Butler schools and other DeKalb County schools for 40 years, retiring in 1976. She was a member of the Garrett Presbyterian Church. She also attended the Maple Grove United Methodist Church near Corunna and taught Sunday School there for many years. She was a member of the DeKalb County Teachers Association.
Mrs Surfus was born May 19, 1901 in Garrett to Gottlieb and Marie (Schmidt) Maurer.
She graduated from Garrett High School in 1920 and graduated from Tri-State College in 1922 with a teacher's certificate. She received her bachelor of arts degree from the University of St Francis in 1958.
She married John B Surfus in 1923. He died in 1958.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Oliver and Herbert Maurer, a sister, Gertrude Swander, a son, Franklin Surfus, and a stepson, Robert Surfus.
Services will be at 11 am Monday in Feller Funeral Home 875 S Wayne St Waterloo with the Rev Douglas Barber officiating. Burial will be in the Cedar Creek Chapel Cemetery in rural Garrett. Calling will be today from 2-6 pm at the funeral home.
