Royal Bensell crossed the Plains in 1854, and mined gold in California. He served 3 years with Co. D 4th Calif. Reg. of the Union Army, and wrote "All Quiet on the Yamhill" about his experiences. He was one of the first white men to claim land on Yaquina Bay, and served as mayor of Newport for 4 terms.
