Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday January 17, 2011 at Prairie Rose Funeral Home, Harper, with Chaplin Mike Hambley officiating. Interment at Harper Cemetery, Harper, Kansas Visitation will be held 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday. Memorials may be given to Ness City United Methodist Church, Jana Mackey Campaign or Hospice of Reno County.
Verde Belle (Johnson) Base passed away January 13, 2011 at her son and daughter-in-laws home south of Kingman, Kansas.
On February 6, 1939 she was born in Reno County to John and Ina (McElwain) Johnson.
After graduating from Harper High School in 1957, she became a secretary at Southwestern Bell Telephone in Harper for eight years. She then became a homemaker and mother to her son Jeff. The family moved to Ness City, Kansas in 1971. She later moved back to Harper County for a brief time. Missing her grandchildren, Nick and Tracy Base she moved back to Ness City until 2008 when Jeff and his wife Cari Jo (Patterson) Base moved her to Kingman to be closer to her sisters and themselves.
Verda greatly missed the many friends she had in Ness City but mostly her great-grandchildren, Aidan and Bradan Grumbein, who now live in LaCrosse with their parents Brandan and Tracy.
"Unconditional Love" are the best words to describe Verda Belle. She was a giver. If it wasn't greeting cards, it was cookies. She was known for her chocolate chip cookies, "the Cookie Lady."
If she could care for someone in need that is what made those heels go clippity-clop. She loved to cook for so many.
She attended the United Methodist Church of Ness City until her move to Kingman.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Larry Johnson and sister the late Marjorie Rorabaugh.
She will be deeply missed by Jeff and Cari Jo Base of Kingman, Kansas, Nick Base of Overland Park, Kansas. Tracy, Brandon, Aidan and Bradan Grumbein of Lacrosse, Kansas, her sisters, Erma Jean Johnson of Harper, Marilyn Johnson of Kansas City, Missouri Shirley Smith of Cheney, and Nadine Williams of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma., many nieces, nephews and friends.
