James Johnson was born Jens Johannessen Høisveen in Ringsaker,Hedmark, Norway on 20 October 1846. He emigrated to America in 1859 with his parents and siblings. They originally settled in West Salem, Wisconsin. On April 29,1870 he married Pernille Thomasdatter Hjemle in Onalaska,Wi. That year they moved to Belmond, Iowa where they raised a family (six boys and four girls). In 1894, they moved first back to West Salem, then on to Blair, Wisconsin. James and Pernille later moved to Minnesota, then on to Coulee, North Dakota.
