She was the daughter of Zakar and Gadar Der Avedisian of Arapkir, Turkey in the Ottoman Empire. Bulbul was the wife of Sarkis Basmajian and they had two children, Setrak and Ohannes. They survived the Armenian Genocide of 1915 and in a 1919 census Bulbul is listed age 40 living in the Shahroz to Shuga Street neighborhood with her sons Setrak (age 15) and Ohannes (age 13). After Ataturk took over and established the Turkish republic, the situation in Arapkir became much more dangerous for Armenians, and so Bulbul and her sons left in 1923 as did many other Armenians in caravans to Aleppo, Syria. From there they moved to Beirut and in 1927 to Canada. Setrak and his father settled in Philadelphia around 1945, while Bulbul and Ohannes lived in Canada. It is known Bulbul made a visit to Philadelphia in 1936. Bulbul was a short, petite woman with a fiery personality. At her death she was living at 5962 Park Avenue, Montreal, Canada, and her body was sent to Philadelphia to be buried with her husband.
