Joseph is thought to have been born in Jefferson County, Kentucky, near where the first church revivals were held. In June of 1800, a church revival movement swept across the nation. It began in Logan County, Kentucky, at the Red River Meeting House near the present day community of Schochoh. This movement was called the "Second Great Awakening", and it may have been what inspired Joseph to become a Methodist preacher. He soon took his skills to Red River, Texas. In the early days at Red River Texas, itinerant preachers, conducted religious services in a log schoolhouse. The First Presbyterian Church in nearby Shiloh is believed to be among the oldest continually operating Protestant churches in the state. Soon Baptist and Methodist churches were organized in Clarksville. No doubt, Joseph would deliver his fiery sermons from one of these pulpits.

He married Polly King on September 10, 1805 in Livingston, Kentucky, but they soon moved to Texas. He and Polly were the parents of the following known children:

Sarah "Sallie" King Reed Stiles (1806-1870)
Jane Reed (1808-?)
Elizabeth Reed (1809-1868)
Nancy Reed (1811-1843)
Hannah Reed (1813-1907)
Mary Ann Reed Terry (1815-1892)
Margaret K. Reed (1818-?)
Katherine C. Reed (1819-?)
Polly Reed (1821-?)
Lucinda King Reed Terry (1823-1897)
John Reed (1824-1868)
Malinda Reed Giddens (1826-1851)
Joseph Reed Jr. (1828-1840)
James H. Reed (1830-1840)

His will says he left his entire estate to his daughter Lucinda.
