Ethel Peterson, age 96, of Shenandoah, Iowa formerly of the Red Oak and Stanton area passed away Saturday, July 21, 2001 at the Gardenview Care Center in Shenandoah after an extended illness. Ethel June Peterson was born June 15, 1905 in Essex, Iowa the daughter of Chas and Emma (Nelson) Almquist. She graduated from the Essex, Iowa High School and Iowa State Teachers College. Ethel was the head typing instructor at Mitchell South Dakota before marrying George Peterson on January 14, 1931 in Essex, Iowa. They lived all of their lives in Page and Montgomery Counties where they farmed. George preceded her in death on May 24, 1991. Ethel was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Stanton and also the Ladies Aid.
Survivors include her 4 children: Duane Peterson and his wife Nina of Savoy, Texas; Genevieve Duell and her husband Ray of Ignacio, Colorado; G. Verle Peterson and his wife Jan of Spring Valley, California; and Charles Peterson and his wife Diane of Shenandoah, Iowa; 9 grandchildren: Karen Peterson of Dallas, Texas; Steven Peterson of Plano, Texas; Laurie Miller of Fullerton, California; Kimberly Wright of Monrovia, California; Robin Fuller of Grants Pass, Oregon; Heather Larson of Cheboygan, Michigan; Cara Pinti of Clarksburg, West Virginia; Caydee Bell of Iowa City, Iowa and Cayla Peterson of Iowa City, Iowa; 14 great grandchildren: Karl Galstad; Megan and Alexi Peterson; Andrew and Aaron Miller; Jenna and Alizae Wright; Trent, Spencer, and Wesley Fuller; Joshua and Rachel Larson; Kaitlin Pinti; and Nicholas Bell; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM Thursday, July 26, 2001 at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Stanton, Iowa with the Rev. Paul Warder officiating. Burial will be in the Essex, Iowa Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 7-8 PM Wednesday July 25, 2001 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak.
