Anthropologist. He was a Native American activist, novelist, and anthropologist. His mother was a Canadian Cree-Métis who fled to Montana finding sanctuary on the Flathead Indian Reservation where she became enrolled as a Salish Kootenai. His first novel was The Surrounded. McNickle worked under John Collier, Commissioner of Indian Affairs, during the 1930s and 1940s encouraging reorganization of self-government among Native Americans. He is famous as one of the founders of the National Congress of American Indians.
