Euphemia "Mae" (Ragan) Jones was born on August 28, 1884, in Oswego, Kansas. Known to her family as Famie Mae but referred to by everyone else as Mae.

She grew up with two sisters and five brothers. Two other siblings died at birth. According to her youngest daughter, Lou Ann Graham, "Mae was raised with five brothers who teased her a lot, and experienced a very hard childhood."

Thin, with long dark hair and delicate, pretty features, in photos Mae's eyes hold a reserved and guarded gaze, making her seem inaccessible to those around her.

Growing up, Mae surrounded herself with as many positive influences as possible and made it a point to find the things at which she excelled and then perfect them. As a young girl with a passion for music and singing, she taught herself to play piano and harmonica.
