Rockland - Jacquelin C. "Jackie" Blethen, 86, died at her home after a long illness.

Born in Lakeview, she was the daughter of John and Minnie MacDougal Blethen, Sr. In 1928, Miss Blethen moved with her family to Rockland, where she attended local schools, graduating from Rockland High School, Class of 1935.

She studied at New England Baptist Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1939. She continued at New England Baptist Hospital as a private duty nurse until enlisting in the U. S. Army.

During World War II, as a Harvard Medical Team Member, Miss Blethen served as a First Lieutenant with the 116th Station Hospital Army Nurse Corp in Ireland, England, France and Germany.

After discharge from her duty with the Army Nurses Corp, Miss Blethen returned to Rockalnd where she entered nursing at Knox County General Hospital. She later moved into Operating Room Nursing. She continued her career at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, retiring from her position of Operating Room Supervisor, in 1982.

A longtime member of Knox County Nurses Guild, Miss Blethen was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Rockland, Senior Citizens, and AARP. Devoted to her family, she took care of her mother in her declining years, until her death at age 98. Miss Blethen was a wonderful cook, an ardent reader, who enjoyed visiting the library, and working around her yard.

She kept in touch with her many Army comrades over the years, including weekly communication with her close friend Lucille Colcord of Conway, New Hampshire.

Predeceased by her brother, John Blethen, November 21, 2001, Miss Blethen is survived by one sister, Grace B. Azevedo of Rockland; one sister-in-law, Ruth G. Blethen of Rockland; nieces and nephews, Michael J. Azevedo and his wife Marie of Liberty, William J. Blethen and his wife Susan of Falmouth, Rand J. Blethen of Miami, FL, Janice B. Cramer and her husband Lyle of Westbrook, Johanna B. Brazier of Holden, Joyce A. Raychard and her husband Wayne of Buxton as well as several great-nieces and nephews.
