Mrs. Newell was born a daughter of Vincent and Martha Hamilton. She had at least three brothers, Hugh Hamilton, Walter Hamilton and Lawrence Hamilton and at least two sisters, Blanch Hamilton Shurtz, and Hazel Hamilton McCowen. Helen married Marion Newell and they were the parents of four daughters, one of whom died in infancy.
