Henry Bluhm Passes Away
Last Monday morning at 7 o'clock, Mr. Henry Bluhm Sr., passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wm. Engel, in Albert Lea, aged 93 years and 7 months.
Death was caused by infirmities brought on by old age and attending complications. This venerable gentleman was almost in perfect health until last year or so and was capable of caring for himself. Mr. Bluhm, at the time of his death was at the head of the 5th generation in his family, this being very unusual.
He leaves to mourn his loss seven children, namely: Frederick, Henry and August of Waldorf, Louis and Herman of Fergus Falls, Mrs. Wm. Engel of Albert Lea and Mrs. Wm. Witte of Denver, Colorado. There are also 28 grand children, 45 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Henry Bluhm was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, and when a young man, came to America and was married in Iowa, nearly 70 years ago. His wife died a year and a half ago. Shortly after being married, he heard about the wonderful opportunities that were open to settlers in our state and they moved to Minnesota and settled on a farm near Meriden, at which place they lived for about 20 years, then moving to a farm near Waldorf village about twelve years ago, where he lived until his wife's death, then going to Albert Lea to spend the rest of his days at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wm. Engel.
When Mr. Bluhm settled in Minnesota his whole wealth consisted of a yoke of oxen and a plow, the country being wild at the time. Indians were numerous and the adventures and hardships that the pioneers of those days went through were severe indeed and it is to such as these that we owe the growth and development of our country.
Their first child was born in a covered wagon in Minnesota, this being the only home they had at the time, but by hard work, honesty and economy, the accumulated a small fortune that made them independent in their declining years.
Mr. Bluhm was a member of the German Lutheran church and the funeral was held at Waldorf, from the home of his son, Henry Bluhm, at one o'clock Thursday afternoon, and interment made at the German Lutheran cemetery at Waldorf, Rev. E. H. Miller officiating.
The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of the entire community.
