This burial is probably Russell R. Clafflin, who served as a Corporal in Company E of the 141st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the American Civil War.

He was killed in action on July 2, 1863 during the heavy fighting in and around the Peach Orchard.

A testament was found on Corporal Clafflin's body.

He was later reinterred in the New York Plot in the Gettysburg National Cemetery in Section C, Site #123.

NOTE: The following information on Russell Claflin was kindly provided by Kurt Lafy.

Russell R. Claflin was born on August 8, 1824. He was a farmer from Athens. He was recruited and enrolled by Joseph B. Reeve.

He was enrolled as an 8th Corporal for a 3-year term on August 16, 1862 and nine days later he was mustered in at age 38 for duty by a Lieutenant Brayton.

At Chancellorsville, Virginia on May 3, 1863 he suffered a slight flesh wound, but it was not severe enough to keep him from duty.

He was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863 when struck twice by minie balls. One passed through his lung, but the second killed him instantly when it penetrated his head, just as a comrade was lifting him up. A comrade, Pvt. Daniel Hiney, of the same company, called him Robert.

He left behind a wife and one son.

The Bradford ARGUS reported his name as Rufus Chaflin.

The Pennsylvania Muster Rolls spelled his last name CLAFFLEN and stated that he was killed on July 3rd.

The BOYS IN BLUE spelled his first name RUSSEL and that he was from Windham Township.
