U.S. Congressman. Born in Fallsburg, New York, he was successful in the lumber business and was supervisor of the town of Wawarsing, (1875, 1883-86). He was on the Democratic State committee and appointed by President Cleveland chairman of the commission to examine the condition of the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1886. In 1891, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second Congress, serving until 1893. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed a member of the New York State commission on fisheries, serving (1894-99). He engaged in mercantile, lumbering and banking pursuits in Ellenville, New York, until his death at age 70.
