- ATLANTA – The funeral for the Rev. Canon William Stevenson Bennett, canon for administration and finance for the Diocese of Atlanta since August 2007, was conducted Tuesday, Nov. 18, at Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, in Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Chester with the Rev. Matt Horne officiating.
- Canon Bennett, 56, died Monday, Nov. 10, 2008.
- A graduate of General Theological Seminary, the Rev. Bennett would have celebrated his 25th anniversary as a priest on Dec. 13. In addition to serving as rector of St. Mary's in Asheville and various other parishes in New York, he was a monk for five years in the Order of the Holy Cross. Canon Bennett also spent 14 years in banking and finance, working for a variety of telecommunications and media companies in New York City. A 1970 graduate of Chester High School, Canon Bennett also graduated from Davidson College and earned a master's degree from Stanford University.
- Survivors include an aunt living in Mississippi; a sister, Emmy S. Bennett of Chester; a niece, Tara Freeman and her husband, Shannon; a nephew, Josh Bennett of Washington, N.C.; and a grandniece, Kylie Freeman of Atlanta.
- He was preceded in death by his parents, James Roy and Ruby Frances McKeown Bennett.
- The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside service at 1766 Boyd Road, Blackstock.
- Memorials may be made to St. Columba's Building Fund, St. Columba's Episcopal Church, 939 James Burgess Road, Suwanee, GA 30024.
