The body of William Austin, 53, of Manteo, was recovered two miles north of Rollinson Light No. 1 and about 3 miles from where a 22-foot motorboat carrying Austin and his brother sank suddenly Thursday afternoon, said Petty Officer Raymond Steele.
The Coast Guard found the body of Velton Austin [#62337758], 54, of Manteo, in Pamlico Sound Thursday evening. The drownings were the second and third in Dare County during the first 12 days of 1979. The men were on their way from Hatteras to Wanchese when their boat sank in Rollinson Channel. Steele said the Coast Guard towed the boat back to Hatteras where investigators will attempt to determine what caused it to sink. No one else was aboard the boat with the Austin brothers.
The brothers were natives of Hatteras and had lived in Manteo 24 years. Both were commercial fishermen. Each had served in World War II and Velton had been in the Coast Guard.
They are survived by their mother, Mrs. Maggie R. Stowe of Manteo; a sister, Mrs. Ada McCarter of Manteo; and a brother, Rube Austin of Pleasant Hill, CA. Velton also is survived by three sons: Velton J. Austin, Jr. of Wanchese, Alpheus Austin of Winston-Salem, and Richard Austin of Frisco; and a grandchild.
A joint funeral will be Sunday in Twiford Colony Chapel in Manteo by the Rev. Carol Daniels. Burial will be in Cudworth Cemetery in Wanchese.
