Died of Pneumonia
Son of John Gardiner and Bettie Coates Workman Richards.
COLUMBIA - Word was received in Columbia yesterday of the death at Camp Dodge, Iowa, of Lieut. Stephen M. Richards, chairman of the railroad commission.
The young man died Wednesday night of pneumonia, developed from influenza. He was 24 years old and was graduated from Clemson College with the class of 1915.
Stephen volunteered as soon as war was declared and was called for the second officers' training camp at Fort Oglethorpe. He won the commission of first lieutenant, and was assigned to Camp Gordon and from there he went to Toledo, Ohio and then to Camp Dodge, Iowa, and there he died from pneumonia. He was serving there as an instructor. He had applied for duty in France and was anxious to go. He had been recommended for promotion to be a captain, and it is certain that he would have been promoted at an early date. He was a member of the 87th Infantry.
