Alfred "Big Boy" Cecil Pool, 72, of Mount Jackson, died peacefully at his home with his loving wife by his side, Thursday, June 10, 2004.

Mr. Pool was born July 7, 1931, in South Boston son of the late Jesse Lennie and Nannie Rosa Comer Pool.

He was owner and operator of Alfred C. Pool Concrete in Mount Jackson.

He is survived by his wife, Peggyann Lucas Higgs Pool who he married April 20, 1962; two daughters, Patricia Ann Funkhouser and her husband Conley of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., and Johna Higgs McFarland and her husband Paul of Harrisonburg; a son, Jeff S. Higgs Sr., and his wife Naomi of Edinburg; a sister, Helen Pool Lowery of South Boston; a brother, George R. Pool of Brookneal; three grandchildren, Jeff Higgs Jr., Angie Lambert and Christy Madigan; and six great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly. He is also survived by his faithful companion, Brandi.

He was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, John Pool Sr. of Mount Jackson, Richard J. Pool of Blackstone, Bernard L. Pool, Lennie S. Pool, Harry C. Pool, Fred R. Pool and William T. Pool, all of South Boston, Juanita Pool Moore and Almalia Pool Bartee both of Danville and also his loving border collie, Pooch.

The funeral will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Dellinger Funeral Home in Mount Jackson with the Rev. Jeffry J. Roberts and the Rev. Ed Wilkins officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Jackson Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Warren Hepler, Dick Bowman, Joe Williams, Johnny Thompson, Jack Zerkel, Doug Phillips, Jimmy Davis and John Rhodes. Honorary pallbearers will be Doug Hawkins, Brian Hepler, Carroll Estep, employees of Alfred C. Pool Concrete and fellow contractor friends.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Jackson United Methodist Church, or Shenandoah County's SPCA.

He loved animals, antiques, auctions, cement work and his garden. He was a friend to all and an honest hard working person.

"You did not go alone, a part of us went with you. Our love will be with you in death as in life."
