The Chico Enterprise, Chico, CA, Monday, May 16, 1938, pg 3: "Durham Woman Taken by Death --- Mrs. Laura [sic, Flora] E. Hiatt, 65, a native of Hanford and resident of Durham for the past 28 years, died at her home on Nelson road early yesterday afternoon.

"She is survived by her husband, W. Hiatt, Durham; two sons, Sherman and Vernon E. Hiatt of Durham; a daughter, Mrs. H.A. Coon, Durham; two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Walton of San Francisco and Mrs. Sophia Chamberlain of Brentwood, and three brothers, G.L. Walton, Hanford; S.C. Walton, Woodland, and C.L. Walton, Snelling, Calif.

"Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. today at the H. C. Bicknell Funeral Home. Rev. E. A. Griffith officiated, Roy Jeffries accompanied by Mrs. Carmelita Doyle sang 'Nearer My God to Thee' and 'Beautiful Isle of Somewhere.'

"Interment was made in Chico cemetery with the following acting as escorts, Allen Coon, Lemuel Coon, Roy White, J.W. Houk, Wesley Sitton and Richard Smith."- Contributed by Carolyn Dowd, via email, September 14, 2021.
