The first Bishop of Baton Rouge, he served from 1961 to 1974. He also took part in the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965. He is buried beside Bishops Joseph Sullivan and Stanley Ott in a courtyard on the eastern side of the Cathedral. His inscription reads: "Most Reverend Robert Emmet Tracy/First Bishop of Baton Rouge/Born September 4, 1909, New Orleans, Louisiana/Ordained Priest on June 12, 1932/Ordained Bishop on May 19, 1959/Installed on November 8, 1961 as the First Bishop of Baton Rouge/Died on April 4, 1980."
