Death of the Oldest Man in Clarke
County.

John C. Foster was born September 1, 1802, and died at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. Marler, six miles northeast of Osceola, February 8, 1896. He was the son of Michael and Elizabeth Foster, natives of Virginia. They removed to Knox county, Tennessee, where he was born. When five or six years old he accompanied his sister, Mrs. Davis, to Sangamon county, Illinois. On December 23, 1828, he was married to Eveline Johnson. She died December 28, 1840. By this wife he became the father of three sons and two daughters, of whom one son and two daughters are living. April 7,1842, he was married to Cynthia Hills. Five children were born to them, of whom three are living. His wife died December 22,1889. He was an old settler and at the time of his death the oldest man in this county, being ninety-three years, five months and eight days old. He was thirty-five years old when converted and led a consistent Christian life; was a member of the M. E. church. The writer visited him a short time before his death, sang the old familiar songs of fifty years ago and prayed with him, and he expressed his strong faith in God and praised him for his blessings all through life. His funeral was preached by the writer at East Chapel Sunday, February 9th at 11 a. m., to a large audience. The text was 2nd Timothy, 4th chapter, 7th verse: "I have fought a good fight; I have kept the faith." His remains were laid to rest in the Ottawa cemetery to await the resurrection morn. He leaves a large circle of friends to mourn his loss. God bless the bereaved relatives of the deceased father.
