Hiram enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 4 March 1862. He was mustered as a Private in Company H, 50th Georgia Infantry. His compiled military service record notes that he was appointed 3rd Sgt. on 1 November 1862 and entitled to 1st Sgt. pay service. His ending rank is shown as 1st Lieutenant when he tendered his resignation on 11 February 1864. A letter written on 26 March 1864 by Colonel of Commanding Regiment to G H Sorrell, A.A.G. is transcribed as follows:

"I respectfully beg leave to report first Lieut. Hiram Gay 50th Regt Co H, as shown without leave since 3 Feb 1864. Lieut. Gay has ______ to resign, his resignation was retn _____ by A& I Genl. Since then I learned that he has been ______ Captain of Militia in Colquitt Co. Georgia where he resides and commissioned by Geo A E Brown. I have the _____, to request that said Lieut. be dropped from the rolls of his company."

(special thanks to C Bozeman for the following info) This is a memorial headstone according to his wife, Martha A Gay's CSA pension. She gives her date of birth as May 4,1842 and says that her husband, Hiram Gay, served in Company H. of the 50th GA Infantry. She says he was killed in the battle of Griswoldville, GA. Also died on 10 August 1864 in Georgia.
