Alva was the son of Clark W. and Phoebe(Carpenter)Smith.His Siblings were Mary Estella(Smith)DeHart and Lucy Josephine(Smith)Salmonson. Alva married Josie Anna Warner on 25 December 1904 and they had four children,Raymond,Clark,Warren,and Esther.He had farmed extensively outside of Ruthton on land that he and his father had acquired from pioneer days and was a breeder of blooded stock.He served two terms as county commissioner and was president of the Holland company.Alvas' life was tragically ended when he was hit by a car outside of Little Falls,Minnesota.
