Sudden Death Of J. W. Alexander
Passed Away at Pocantico Hills, New York, Saturday Evening-Funeral Held Here
Word has been received here of the sudden death of John W. Alexander, formerly of this city, at Pocantico Hills, New York, where he had been visiting his daughter, Mrs. W. S. Richardson. It had been known for some time that Mr. Alexander was suffering from heart trouble but the news of his death was a great surprise.
The body was brought to Painesville Tuesday morning for burial and funeral services were held at the residence of F. C. Moodey, Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clcok.
J. W. Alexander was born in Rochester, N. Y. in 1844. His grandfather was a native of Scotland and came to America in 1756. In August, 1861, at the age of seventeen, Mr. Alexander enlisted in Company C of the Thirty-third New York Infantry and participated in all the engagements of the Potomac Army. On the expiration of his two years' enlistment with the Thirty-third New York regiment, he returned to the Empire State and assisted in organizing the First New York Veteran Cavalry, in which he was commissioned quartermaster. He served through the Shenandoah Valley Campaign and was mustered out in July, 1865.
After the war he was engaged in the oil and oil well supply industry in Pennsylvania until 1881 when he came to Painesville and bought an interest in the Painesville Gas Company, being elected president.
Mr. Alexander was married to Miss S. Alice Steele in 1871. Mrs. Alexander and two children, George S. Alexander of Marietta and Mr. W. S. Richardson of New York, survive him. Mr. Alexander was a brother-in-law of George P. Steele and Mrs. F. C. Moodey.
Mr. Alexander was a Mason and a member of Dyer Post No. 17, G. A. R. Mr. and Mrs. Alexander were both members of the First Baptist Church during their residence here. For the past few years they had been living in Marietta.
