Thomas Edison "Tom" Mansfield Jr., 78, a resident of Ginger Cove retirement community in Annapolis and previously of Arnold, died of Parkinson's disease-related illnesses on Oct. 10 at the Ginger Cove health center.

Born May 9, 1928, in Ford City, Pa., and a graduate of Ford City High School, Mr. Mansfield received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and earned a master's degree from Drexel University.

He served as a private in the Army. Later he worked for 35 years at the David Taylor Research and Development Center, finishing as a project engineer. He also worked five years for Mar Inc.

Known for his vast computer skills, Mr. Mansfield enjoyed working with computers, doing family history, reading, traveling and photography.

He was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church where he was a trustee and a member of the Naval Academy Officers and Faculty Club and the Naval Institute. He also was active with a retirees group from the David Taylor Research Center.

Surviving are his wife, Helen A. Mansfield, whom he married June 6, 1952; one son, Craig David Mansfield of Annapolis; one daughter, Patricia Richards Coolbaugh of Millersville; one brother, Howard D. Mansfield of Palmer, Ill.; and four grandchildren.

He was the son of the late Hazel Mae and Thomas E. Mansfield Sr. and the brother of the late Harold G. and Lloyd Mansfield.
