Arvil Bert Hunter age 75 of Miami, NM, passed away Saturday July 4, 2009 in Raton. He was born August 7, 1933 in Santa Rita, NM, the son of Elmer and Gladys Eves, Hunter. Bert served in the United States Navy active duty as a Boiler Operator Helper from July 18, 1951 through June 18, 1954 earning a National Defence Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Koren Service Medal, and a China Service Medal and remained inactive duty through 1959. After his honorable discharge in 1954. Upon his return to Bayard, he met Mary Ann Montoya and later got married on December 27, 1958 in Springer, NM, a union that lasted for fifty years. Bert and Mary continued to reside in Bayard, where he worked at Kennecott Mines in Santa Rita, NM. He worked in the mine from 1954 to 1961, he then moved to Springer in 1961 where he began his career at the New Mexico Boys School in receiving for seven years. He attended the Western University in Silver City, NM, where he obtained his degree and became the Math Teacher at the New Mexico Boys School. He moved to Miami NM, in 1962 where he began his farming and ranching hobbies along with his continued career at the Boys School. After retiring from the Boys School in 1990, her served as County Commissioner for Colfax County for one term from 1991 until 1992. Through out his last years of retirement Bert enjoyed playing pool, ranching and farming, hunting, fishing and visiting with friends. He is preceded in death by his parents. Bert is survived by his wife Mary Ann of the home. two sons Bobby Hunter of Raton, and Jimmy Hunter of Glendale, AZ. sister Joyce Garton and husband Lester of Rio Rancho, NM, brother Elmer Hunter and wife Ann of Aztec, NM, brother-in-laws Ed Fernandez of Springer, NM, and Edward C. Montoya of Springer, NM,sister-in-law Mary Ellen Redman and husband Michael of Espanola, NM. numerous nieces, nephews friends and neighbors. At Berts request cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
