Richard James Shelburne was born December 5, 1955 in Ft. Pierce, Florida. He was the son of Billie Hedrick and Mary Jane Lee Shelburne. He married Gynell Matchek February 24, 1973 in Ballinger, Texas.

Richard was an outstanding saxophone player and was active in the Ballinger High School Band. He was named to All-District, All-Region and All-Area Bands. He was also named Who's Who in Algebra and Typing. He was a member of the Future Farmers of America and played on the tennis team. He graduated from San Angelo Central High School in 1974.

His life was cut tragically short in an accident involving a fall from a tree while working for a local landscaping company in San Angelo, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his son, James Hedrick Shelburne, II.
