Lauretta Meyer Bigelow, age 85, died Saturday, November 20, 2010, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge, where she was a Circle member.
Born September 18, 1925, she was the daughter of Emil and Lillian Meyer of Clinton, Iowa. Graduating in 1948 from the Colorado University School of Nursing, Mrs. Bigelow was interested in pediatric nursing and pursued her career at the Children's Hospitals of Denver and Boston. She also served two years in the US Navy Nurse Corps during the Korean Conflict. Mrs. Bigelow came to work at Oak Ridge Hospital in 1953 in the pediatric unit. She worked with Dr. W. P. Hardy, Pediatrician. In 1985, she continued her education at Roane State Community College, where she graduated with an Associate Degree in Science.
She met John Bigelow, her husband of 54 years, in Oak Ridge, and they were married in Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA. They raised three children and enjoyed traveling, especially to Hawaii.
During her years in Oak Ridge, Mrs. Bigelow participated in many volunteer activities, including the Museum of Science and Energy, Recording for the Blind, The Tree House Gallery, Oak Ridge Public Library, Children's Library, and the YWCA. At the Y, she served as the Board Secretary and started a marking-in room for the Nearly New Shop. She was also a member of the Oak Ridge Women's Club, where she served as Secretary and was active in the Novice Bridge Section.
Mrs. Bigelow is preceded in death by her parents, her husband John, her brother Charles Meyer, and her sister Marion Tannebring.
Mrs. Bigelow is survived by her three children, Holly Martin of Bristow, VA, Tim Bigelow of Knoxville, TN, and Andy Bigelow of Centreville, VA; two daughters-in-law, Janet Bigelow and Barbie Bigelow; and eight grandchildren, Rachel Bigelow, Clara and Jonathan Bigelow, and Emily, Nathaniel, Louisa, William, and Christopher Martin. She is also survived by one brother, David Meyer of St. Louis; one brother-in-law, Dr. William Tannebring of Beverly, MA; one sister-in-law, Marlys Bigelow of Oak Ridge; and 12 nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give special thanks to her friend Dot Griffith, to Serita and Vay of Clinch River Home Health, to the staff at Briarcliff Health Care Center, and to Jane Morris of FUMC for taking such wonderful care of Laurie.
Receiving of friends will be at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 23, with a service to follow at 7:00 in the Chapel of Weatherford Mortuary at 158 South Jefferson Circle, Oak Ridge, TN. The Reverend Mahan Archer of First United Methodist Church will be officiating. Graveside services will be held at Anderson Memorial Gardens at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 24.
