Horace 'Rowe' Dean enlisted on August 11, 1862 at Rochester, New York at the age of 22. He served in the Civil War as a Private in Company C of the 4th Regiment of the New York Heavy Artillery. His unit was present at the battles of Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Reams' Station.
Rowe Dean was taken prisoner and died as a prisoner of war on November 10, 1964 at a camp in Salisbury, North Carolina. He was about 24 years old.
