WINSTON-SALEM - Alda Lucille Wiggs Holmes, 88, a resident of Winston-Salem, passed away Friday, December 31, 2010, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Alda was born in Kenly, NC and was the daughter of the late Addison and Jessie Jernigan Wiggs. Preceding her in death was one brother, Kenneth Wiggs; her husband, James Milton Holmes, having passed away in 1987. Three sisters, Mavis Hammond, Hazel Cooper, and Frances S. Jackson survive her, in addition to many beloved nieces and nephews. Prior to moving to Winston-Salem in 1948, Mrs. Holmes resided in and around the Johnston County area of North Carolina, where she met her husband of 45 years. After moving to Winston-Salem, Mrs. Holmes spent many happy years raising her children, helping her husband with the garden, and freezing and canning fruits and vegetables. She was an excellent seamstress, making many dresses and clothes for her children. She found enjoyment in being a "stay-at-home mom" and nurturing life-long friendships with her neighbors of over fifty years. She always enjoyed being together with family. Alda enjoyed preparing her delicious home cooked meals of fresh vegetables and homemade biscuits. She was a long time member of Glenn View Baptist Church, where in her earlier years she was involved in many church activities, such as the Baptist Woman's Missionary Union (WMU), the church nursery, and Vacation Bible School. Surviving family include her daughter, Mary Melinda Holmes of Akron, OH, James Addison Holmes and wife Rebecca of Statesboro, GA, Don Anthony Holmes and wife Sarah of Winston Salem, NC, and Mark Alexander Holmes and wife Nancy of Farmington, NC; six grandchildren, David Holmes and wife Diane, Amy H. Abernathy and husband Robert, Rachel Holmes, Virgil Holmes and wife Jessica, Virginia Holmes, and Samantha H. Orlando and husband, Dominick. Also surviving Mrs. Holmes are several great-grandchildren. A Funeral Service will be held 2 p.m., January 9, 2011 at Rose & Graham Funeral Home Chapel in Benson, NC. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Rev. Johnny Gupton of Glenn View Baptist Church will conduct the service. A Graveside Interment will immediately follow the service in Roselawn Cemetery, Benson. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Mrs. Holmes' memory may be made to Glenn View Baptist Church, 4275 Glenn High Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27107-7705 or to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem NC 27103. Arrangements by Rose & Graham Funeral Home, Benson.
