Charles Stinson
Charles Stinson, who served 45 years with the Emporia fire department, died at 10:30 o'clock this morning at a nursing home at 401 Constitution. His home was at 709 and retired January 1, 1948.
Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
Mr. Stinson was born June 24, 1869, at Bethany, Mo., the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Stinson. He came to Kansas in 1876 and to Emporia in 1881. Mrs. Stinson died March 30, 1949.
He is survived by four sons, C.E. Stinson, Parsons; J.O. Stinson, Norwalk, Calif; A.A. Stinson 1105 Union; F.C. Stinson, Kansas City, Mo., one daughter, Mrs. G.B. Campbell, 410 Cottonwood; and by six granddaughters, five grandsons and 16 great grandchildren. He was a member of the Friends church.
Charles Stinson became a member of the Emporia volunteer fire company in 1902 while in his 20's, after having "loafed around" the station during many of his teenage years. He was appointed chief by Mayor Frank McCain in 1909 and served as chief under 14 different mayors and under the present city manager. His tenure in the fire department extended from the days of kerosene lamps and mud streets over into the era of modern equipment and new quarters for the department in the Civic auditorium.
