The Chico Enterprise, Monday Evening, October 21, 1929: "C.S. Compton Taken By Death. Charles Sumner Compton, 69, native of Allegheny City, Penn., died at his home, 930 Normal street, last evening at 7:35 following an illness of long duration.
"Compton has been a resident of California for 65 years and had resided in Chico since 1905. He was a civil engineer by profession and assisted in the construction of the Sacramento Northern line and the Butte county railroad. For a number of years he was connected with the Diamond Match company at Stirling City. Compton was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, was consulting engineer of the old Norther Electric Railway and resigned the latter connection to give his entire time to the foundation in 1906 of the Sierra Polytechnic Institute at Paradise, of which he was the chief factor and first president. He pledged his personal resources upon assurances of backing by the Congregational church authorities, to pay the salaries of the instructors of the Polytechnic school and when it failed lost heavily in settlement of its obligations. The community of Paradise owes much to the efforts of Compton a quarter of a century ago to induce the highest class of settlers there and promote in every way the welfare of the ridge district.
"Compton was affiliated with the International Bible students and a reader of that society will have charge of the funeral services which will be held in the Westfall funeral home Tuesday afternoon at 2:30. Burial will be in the Chico cemetery.
"Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Joe H. Compton of Chico, and the following sons and daughters: Wendell W. Compton of Arcata, J.A. Compton of San Francisco, Mrs. H.A. Draper of Chico, Mrs. T.A. Tatman of Chico, Donald P. Compton of Susanville, Mrs. D.S. Johnson of Chico, Edith Compton of Palo Alto and Paul Compton of Chico. Five grandchildren and two brothers, J.E. Compton of Oakland, and F.A. Compton of Chico, also survive."
