William Eugene Cox, 71, of the 200 block of Wax Myrtle Trail, died at home Monday, July 4, 1994.
Mr. Cox served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a radioman. He was a survivor of the sinking of the U.S.S. Vincennes, one of three heavy cruisers lost in the attack on the Solomon Islands in August, 1942. Following the sinking he spent 18 hours clinging to a life raft before being rescued by an American destroyer. He was also a veteran of the Korean War.
Before retiring to the Outer Banks, Mr. Cox lived in Richmond, where he attended the University of Richmond and later worked as a manufacturer's agent for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Julia Kilpatrick. Cox; a son, Jeffery Roger Cox; a daughter, Anita Marie Foster; and four grandsons.

A graveside service will be held Friday, July 8, at 11 a.m. at the Southern Shores Cemetery on Dogwood Trail. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Dare Hospice, P.O. 2511, Kill Devil Hills, N.C. 27948 or Grace Lutheran Church by the Sea, Nags Head, N.C. 27959. Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, is in charge of arrangements.
